Beltane, also known as May Day, is an ancient Gaelic festival that falls halfway between the Spring Equinox and Summer Solstice. The name “Beltane” translates to “bright fire” and was traditionally celebrated with great bonfires that burned throughout the night on the first of May. Beltane festivals often included dancing, feasting, and driving cattle between flames to promote purification and protection of local livestock. Beltane honors the union of the divine masculine (the Green man, who represents the sun) and the divine feminine (the May Queen, who represents the Earth). Couples would often wed on Beltane eve or if couples wished to conceive, they would also “leap the Beltane fire.” Babies conceived under a Beltane moon were considered gifts from the gods. Furthermore, if an unmarried couple happened to conceive on Beltane, they would be wed in a handfasting ceremony six weeks later on the Summer Solstice.
Beltane rituals and celebrations are fraught with passion, fertility, abundance, and honoring of the life-giving properties of Earth along with the animals and humans which inhabit her. It is a time to reflect on our own passions and tap into the heathen, untamed spirit within.

What passions are resonating inside of you? Do you have a creative outlet where these passions can flow freely?
How do your express yourself? Do you feel like you have to keep part of you hidden or under “lock and key”?
Is there a part of yourself that is aching to be set free?
Beltane allows us to tap into that wild and unbridled Self and gives them permission to be seen or be heard. This particular Beltane night is ripe with fertile energy as we are graced with a glorious full moon on May 1st, 2026. The full moon represents abundance, prosperity, and peak lumination as her full shape broadcasts across the night sky. She is unabashed, unashamed, and unapologetic as she bears all to witness her feral boldness. The Moon at her fullest reminds you to bear all that you are and all that you have to give to this world.

This is also a great time to tap into your sensual and erotic Self. Sensual and sexual energy live and breathe within us and are often ignored or become neglected over time. Let’s harken back to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs who emphasized that sex was one of the basic human physiological needs (right next to food, water, and shelter). Humans are more complex than our animal counterparts and we find that the emotional, mental, and spiritual components of ourselves are often intertwined or interfere with our sexual selves. We may have esteem or arousal issues with our changing and aging bodies. We may find that our partners desire different things than we want or are able to provide. Bearing and raising children may have shifted our priorities, limit opportunities, or affect our stamina. We also live in a highly sexualized culture and society that is inundated with unrealistic expectations and absolute falsehoods about human sexuality. Many social constructs enforce shame or stigma surrounding sexual gratification or exploration and unfortunately target women more frequently than men.

Take a moment to reflect on how you derive sensual pleasure (and not how you’ve been taught by Hollywood or the porn industry to think or feel about your body). Is it through direct touch, lingered anticipation, words spoken or written? Is it by performing a sultry dance or wearing certain clothes? Have you ever been kink curious or titillated by the taboo? You can explore these topics further through sex-ploration exercises and erotic framework techniques. This doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of this conversation but there are several books and workshops dedicated to this specialty.

Use this passionately-charged season to seek out and indulge in pleasurable activities (either alone or partnered). Explore something that you haven’t tried before but always wanted to. Examine inner desires. Tend the fire within. Your inner May Queen will thank you!
